How to calculate your estimated payout range:

To calculate an estimated gold payout range, multiply the item’s weight in grams by both ends of the relevant per-gram range. For example, multiply a 10-gram 18ct gold chain by the minimum and maximum 18ct rates to estimate its payout range. Note: Your final payout depends on assessment and verification. Stones and gems are not included in the gold weight valuation.

What is the best way to sell gold jewellery in New Zealand?

Start by checking the jewellery’s hallmark and approximate weight, then compare buyers using the same live gold price and the actual payout per gram for that carat. Ask how stone weight, non-gold components, testing, fees and payment timing are handled. A precious-metal buyer is generally suited to broken or unwanted jewellery being sold for its gold content. Branded, antique or gemstone jewellery may be worth having appraised by a jewellery or auction specialist before selling it for scrap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will Christchurch Gold pay for my gold jewellery?

Christchurch Gold estimates your payout by multiplying the verified metal weight in grams by the current payout range for the item’s purity. Multiply the weight by both the minimum and maximum per-gram rates shown above to estimate the lower and upper payout values. Your final offer is based on the market rate at the time we assess your jewellery, following verification.

Are the calculator rates live?

Yes. The calculator uses market-linked rates that update throughout the trading day. The page displays the current gold payout ranges, single silver payout rates and the last updated time; as the market moves, these values may change.

Do I need to post my jewellery before knowing the price?

No. Christchurch Gold provides an upfront online estimate before you post your jewellery. Customers can sell in person by appointment in Christchurch or use the free, fully insured nationwide mail-in service. Your final offer is provided after assessment and reflects the market rate at that time.

Is the calculator payout guaranteed?

No. The calculator provides an indicative estimate using the current market rate and cannot be locked in. Your final offer is based on the market rate at the time of assessment, as well as professional verification of the item’s weight, purity, condition, and any stones or non-metal components.

What identification do I need?

For a Christchurch appointment, bring an acceptable photo ID: a current passport; a current New Zealand or overseas photo driver licence; a current New Zealand government-issued photo ID; a HANZ 18+ card; or a current New Zealand secondary or composite school student photo ID. A qualifying document that expired less than two years ago can also be used. You must provide your full name, contact address, phone number and date of birth, and sign the dealer’s record. For a postal transaction, include a clear copy of an acceptable photo ID and return the signed seller form with the same details; proof of address may also be requested. Licensed dealers record the seller and transaction details and how identity was verified. See the Ministry of Justice dealer requirements.

How is gold jewellery tested?

We first inspect each piece and its hallmarks, then weigh it using calibrated scales. Purity is tested before the final offer is confirmed. Stones, clasps, springs and other non-gold components are identified and their weight is excluded or deducted where needed, so the payout is based on the verified precious-metal content.

What do gold hallmarks mean?

A numerical hallmark usually states the proportion of pure gold in the alloy. Carat marks express the same purity as parts out of 24.

Hallmark Carat Gold purity
3759ct37.5%
41710ct41.7%
58514ct58.5%
75018ct75%
91622ct91.6%
95823ct95.8%

Should every piece be sold for scrap gold?

No. Designer, antique and collectible jewellery, and pieces with valuable diamonds or gemstones, can have resale value above their precious-metal content. Consider an appraisal from a jewellery, antique or auction specialist before selling a potentially valuable piece for scrap. Broken, worn or ordinary unwanted jewellery is generally more suited to a precious-metal valuation.

Our Difference: An Estimate Before You Post

Check an indicative value before sending, using the same carat and approximate weight as your jewellery. We confirm the offer after verifying weight and purity at the current rate. You decide whether to accept.

Old, Broken and Unwanted Gold Jewellery

We buy unwanted and inherited solid yellow, white and rose gold jewellery in any condition. Receipts and old valuations are not required because we value the verified metal weight and purity.

Gold Necklaces & Chains

We buy solid gold chains with broken clasps, damaged links or no receipt, assessing the recoverable metal rather than the item’s age or style.

Gold Bracelets & Bangles

Broken, bent, incomplete and unwanted solid gold pieces can be assessed after clasps, springs and other non-gold parts are identified.

Gold Rings & Wedding Bands

We assess plain, worn, damaged or stone-set rings for their metal content. Gemstones are not included in the precious-metal valuation.

Broken Gold Jewellery & Single Earrings

Snapped chains, scrap gold, single earrings and unmatched pieces can retain metal value even when they are not suitable to wear or resell.

Items We Cannot Process

Gemstones and diamonds: We value precious metal only. Consider having valuable stones appraised or removed before selling; otherwise their estimated weight is excluded from the offer.

Gold-plated jewellery: We buy solid gold and silver, not plated or rolled-gold items. We can confirm an item’s purity during assessment.

Secure Transactions — Locally in Christchurch or Nationwide via Courier

Deal with insured precious-metal specialists through a documented assessment and secure selling process.

Second-hand jewellery purchases are conducted by Canterbury Collectables Ltd, trading as Christchurch Gold, under New Zealand Second-hand Dealer Licence 26-139803.

Note: Online calculator figures are indicative estimates based on current market rates. Your final offer is based on the market rate at the time of assessment and is subject to professional verification of weight, condition, and purity.
